  • *Number of crematoria: 1,558 (in 1998)
     
    • *In 1998 there were 7,787 crematoria in Japan. Among these only 1,558 were conducting one or more cremations a year and were operating with three basic elements, i.e. a building, a cremator and air exhaustion equipment. Most of the remaining crematoria were open-field crematoria, where cremation was conducted with natural materials.
       
    • *In 1998 approximately 10 crematoria were newly constructed.
       
    • *In 1999 new crematoria were established at:
