  • Number of crematoria: Approximately 1,600 (in 2000)
  • Notes on the number of crematoria:
    1. In 2000 there were 7,338 crematoria in Japan. Among these only approximately 1,600 were conducting one or more cremations a year and were operating with three basic elements, i.e. a building, a cremator and air exhaustion equipment. Most of the remaining crematoria were open-field crematoria, where cremation was conducted with natural materials.
    2. In 2001 approximately 30 crematoria were newly constructed at:

      • Osaka City (Uriwari crematory)
      • Minoo City
      • Sendai City
      • Shizuoka City
      • Takefu City
      • Tendou City
      • & 22 other locations
