  • Number of crematoria: Approximately 1,600 (in 2001)
  • Notes on the number of crematoria:
    1. In 2001 there were 7,220 crematoria in Japan. Among these only approximately 1,600 were conducting one or more cremations a year and were operating with three basic elements, i.e. a building, a cremator and air exhaustion equipment. Most of the remaining crematoria were open-field crematoria, where cremation was conducted with natural materials.
