  • Notes on the number of crematoria:
    1. In 2005 there were 5,117 crematoria in Japan. Among these only approximately 1,450 were conducting one or more cremations a year and were operating with three basic elements, i.e. a building, a cremator and air exhaustion equipment. Most of the remaining crematoria were open-field crematoria, where cremation was conducted with natural materials.
    2. In 2005 17 crematoria were newly constructed at the following locations:
